Binary Stars It is estimated that half of all stars are members
of binaries. This picture portrays a
Cataclysmic Variable
in which a white dwarf
(a collapsed star with the mass of the Sun in the volume of the Earth)
and a low-mass secondary
star orbit close together every few hours.
Gas is stripped off the secondary star and falls towards the white dwarf.
